Here we are, March of 2024 and it has been one year since I got back into model railroading. As I sit back and think about what the year and what the hobby has brought me, it makes me feel complete. Although my layout is far from complete, the podcast and the videos and the amazing people I have met from the podcast, whether that is just through email or in person, it just makes me happy that I decided to get back into the hobby.
Having said all that, I also feel somewhat overwhelmed as I build the layout. As time goes on, I think of things that I want to do or try with the layout. The trys are just that, trials until I decide, IF, I want to proceed with it. As an example, I am going to be trying out Keyed switches on the front panle for mainline turnouts. This is something I saw from James McNabb when he had his IAIS Grimes line. Although his keyed switches were mechanical, I am going the electronic route.
Just like the railroads have locks on their switch stands to prevent anyone from just walking up and throwing a switch, My layout will have something similar to that for the mainline switched to start out. I am using a single pole single throw switch that is protected by a small key. The operator will have to get permission before unlocking the turnout. then will have to have the turnout thrown in the proper position before they lock it again.
Is this absolutely neccessary? No, but it adds to the real life railroading experience.
I am also starting the switch to JMRI (Jave Model Railroad Interface) for railcar routing and tracking. While in the past and currently using card card and waybill system, I made the decision to start to use JMRI for the switch list capabilities. It is more modern and thus more prototypical for what I am modeling. Plus I feel it will be easier for the operators to follow than try and learn the car card system if they have never used it. I plan to add the ability for operators to use a WiThrottle as well down the road.
Lastly, The upper level of the layout is officially started. I have the first of the upper level benchwork started and am excited to get more lumber and get more done. Keep an eye out on the Facebook Pages, YouTube, & TikTok for updates.
